Perceptions, discourses and representations related to experiences of obstetric violence.

Global activists define obstetric violence (OV) as the appropriation of women’s body and reproductive processes by health personnel, aiming for the recognition of OV as a type of structural violence against women. This research will analyze OV as experience, concept, and discourse in Portugal, while situating the debate within an international context. What are the meanings of lived experiences of OV, what is the impact of OV-related trauma, and what are the personal, social and political strategies women and their partners mobilize in response to it? The research proposes an innovative approach linking medical anthropology, visual culture studies, collaborative experimental artistic creation and activist research to examine personal experiences, along with emerging discourses and modes of representation. It will investigate art as a form of knowledge and transformative practice, bringing public awareness to social dimensions of OV and feeding both activist research and art/anthropology debates.
